Money Is Not Everything

It's no secret that money is essential. We need it to pay our bills, buy food and shelter, and enjoy the occasional luxury. Many of us think it is the key to happiness. Money is essential in life, but it should not be the sole reason we do everything. Many other things are more important, so don't forget what's necessary while you're busy working for money.

Having more money might not make you happy.

Money is such an interesting thing. It is only a piece of paper with an image of a prominent figure, or it can be a digital figure in your account, and yet, it possesses such power to dominate and control the lives of all of us. Our society emphasizes working hard to make more money and puts the idea in our heads that chasing money should be our number one priority in life. This idea causes human beings to compete against each other to earn more money. As a result, many of us make money the primary driver of our actions in life. Despite all of this, having all the money you want in your life may not necessarily bring happiness and fulfillment.

We can't dismiss the importance of money in our lives. However, it is something that we need to do the following things:

  • Our earned money supports our daily lives by being a requirement for essential things, such as food, clothing, shelter, and being able to pay bills.
  • Having enough money makes our lives more secure by having funds in emergencies like accidents or illness.
  • When you earn money, you will be able to buy some fancy stuff like the latest gadgets or spend them for leisure like taking trips.
  • When you accumulate wealth, you open up more opportunities in your life that you cannot do when you have meager amounts of cash.
  • Money offers a higher quality of life, such as gaining access to quality education by being able to afford to go to prestigious schools or treating yourself better of illnesses by having access to high-quality hospitals.
  • You can use it as capital to start your own business and create the lifestyle you want by saving enough money.

If money can bring such positives in our lives, why do you hear some people preach that it is the root of all evil or that chasing after it too much is not suitable for you? Money by itself is not evil. It is us who placed a value on it. Our basic necessities are tied to having enough money to buy them. It's no wonder why many people dedicate their lives to earning money because having money is akin to being able to live in this world. In a sense, money can buy dreams and happiness and bring you good fortune. However, we must realize money is just a means to acquire what we want in life. It shouldn't be the end goal of every decision and action we have to make. Money is good, but if we have little self-control and discipline, it can easily corrupt and take control of us. How we spend money and what we choose to do with it is essentially a reflection of ourselves.

There are more worthwhile things to pursue in life that money can't buy. These things can be considered true wealth and make you happier and more fulfilled. You have to realize their importance and don't waste all your time living only for money.

1. Time

You can have all the money in the world, but none of it will be able to buy time. Time is perhaps the most precious commodity in life because it is finite and nonrenewable, and one can only do so much within the allotted time we have. Therefore, you have to assess whether it's worth sacrificing all your time to earn money. The irony is that you cannot have the time to enjoy what you worked for if you acquire some illness or you reach the point where you are too old or weak to enjoy anything. So won't it be better to start enjoying your life now while you can and not wait for an idealized future that might not come?

2. Health

Your health is another precious thing you have to take good care of maintaining. Unfortunately, some people sacrifice their health with their desire to earn so much money. They work for long hours, forego exercise, eat unhealthy food, and lose sleep over money. You can spend all the money you accumulated to treat the disease you acquire later. Even with the latest medical equipment and technologies, sometimes, they are not enough to treat the most severe of disorders, which you can catch if you neglect your health to earn money. You have to know how much money can satisfy you to limit how much work you need to do and maintain good health to live a healthy life.

3. Good relationships

Another thing that can get sacrificed if we spend too much of our life making money is our relationships with people. One cannot buy meaningful relationships in an instant. It's something that you build over time with people you value, such as family members, friends, and your significant other. You must learn to maintain a balancing act of working to earn money while still being able to spend time with your loved ones if possible.

4. Happiness

To a certain extent, money can buy happiness. Money allows us to buy things that we want or create memorable experiences, such as traveling to a different country, traveling on a vacation trip, setting up parties, or get-togethers with our friends. However, we should not equate money with happiness. Sure enough, possessing lots of money might make us smile, but it's only for a short moment. What we decide to do with our money is what can bring us happiness. Money is just a tool that can lead us to happiness.

5. Life

Life is more important than money in that your entire life should not just be about grinding daily for work for several decades to make money grow. We all know how important money is to our daily lives, but life is more than that. Creating memorable experiences, building up a good reputation, forming lasting relationships with people, making your mark in this world, and doing the things you love are all worthy goals to live life to the fullest. Your life should not serve money, and it should be the other way around.

Money is not the only goal you should be thinking about

You can be the richest man in the world, but it's not a guarantee you will be happy and feel satisfied with your life. Money is essential because it gives us security and the freedom to do what we want in life. However, pursuing it can make us forget the blessings we already have in life and bring grave misery if we keep on wanting more of it. Therefore, we should never forget that money is only a tool, and it's up to us to utilize it properly to attain the most vital things in life.
